CALEB SHOVED MADELYN BEHIND him and out the door.

“Dad?” Roy’s face turned a pasty white, and he stumbled forward toward the body, but Caleb blocked him.

“No, Roy, don’t touch anything. This is a crime scene.”

“My father…” Roy doubled over with shock and grief, then started to shake.

Madelyn pulled herself together faster than he would have imagined and gently gripped Roy’s arm. “Come on, Roy. Step into the hall and take a deep breath.”

Not that the hallway was any less of a reminder of death. The scents of chemicals permeated the floors and walls. The overwhelming feeling of grief and death and lost spirits lingered, their whispers taunting him. Angry spirits. Lost souls. Ones hanging in limbo and desperate for redemption. Others determined to exact revenge for a life cut short.

Then others who simply weren’t ready to accept their fate and let go of loved ones.

Was that the reason Mara’s spirit hovered by her grave? Was she angry with him? Or was she ready to move on but needed some kind of closure with him?

For a moment, he wondered if that could be the case between Sara and Cissy, if Cissy had already passed. Was her spirit hanging on, needing Sara to find her murderer so she could rest in peace?

No. He had to remain positive.

Sara’s images had been reflected in his own mind. He’d heard Cissy’s screams and felt her terror as if she was very much alive.

A low, keening sound erupted from Roy, jerking Caleb from his thoughts.

Madelyn helped the undertaker into a chair, and Roy leaned over, his elbows on his knees, gasping for air as if he might faint.

Caleb glanced back at Howard and silently cursed. Dammit, another lead gone.

How had the killer known they were going to question Nadine and Howard? Was there anyone else on his hit list?

Caleb punched the sheriff’s number. “Sheriff Gray, this is Caleb Walker. I’m at the funeral home. Howard Zimmerman is dead.”

“I’ll be right there.” Sheriff Gray’s breath quickened as if he was hurrying outside. “What happened?”

Caleb explained his suspicions about the exhumation and funeral home. “Howard’s son Roy brought us downstairs to speak to his father, but we found his body in one of the caskets.”

“Damn,” Sheriff Gray muttered. “Seems like everyone connected to Emery and the adoptions is being killed off.”

“Yeah, someone is determined not to leave any witnesses behind.” Caleb remembered the threat to Madelyn and Sara.

But the bastard would not hurt either one of them. Not unless he killed Caleb first.
